The issuer behind this note was John G. Winter, a financier in Columbus, GA. Due to Georgia laws prohibiting such private notes, Winter created the Bank of St. Marys in Apalachicola and made the notes payable in New York (and Charleston on earlier issues). The house of cards collapsed in April, 1852 when the bank suspended. This note features a vignette of an allegorical woman seated in a large 2 flanked by four medallion-like cameo heads. The vignette of the woman, also known as Commerce, also appeared on Confederate T36 notes.
