Apalachicola, FL- Commercial Bank of Florida $1 G2 Benice 14 Remainder PMG Very Fine 30.
The bank was incorporated in 1833 over the governor’s veto. The bank was a troubled operation beginning in 1837 when the bank was sold to Hugh Stephenson, who two weeks after assuming ownership fled town with the bank’s assets. He was arrested and the assets were recovered, but the bank (including its unauthorized branch in St. Joseph, FL) was never the same, and soon died a merciful corporate death. The $1 design features a peaceful scene of a Native American man paddling a canoe, flanked by two identical vignettes of Liberty standing. Portraits of Washington and Lafayette appear in end panels.
