Apalachicola, FL- Commercial Bank of Florida $20 Dec. 1, 1835 G14 Benice 20 PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
The bank was incorporated in 1833 over the governor’s veto. The bank remained in business until 1837 when the bank’s controlling stockholder and president, Hugh Stephenson left town with the bank’s assets. Although he was arrested and the assets returned, the Panic of 1837 was enough additional stress to cause the bank’s suspension shortly thereafter. The note’s classic design features identical vignettes of Justice standing on both ends, with two sailing vessels flanking a 20 counter at center. A pretty lightly circulated example with no repairs or meaningful condition impairments noted. This example served as the plate note in the Benice Florida catalog.
