Apalachicola, FL- John G. Winter at Bank of St. Marys at Columbus, GA 50¢ Jan. 1, 1842 Benice 35 PMG Very Fine 25.
The issuer behind this note was John G. Winter, a financier in Columbus, GA. Due to Georgia laws prohibiting such private notes, Winter created the Bank of St. Marys in Apalachicola and made the notes payable in New York (and Charleston on earlier issues). The house of cards collapsed in April, 1852 when the bank suspended. This note literally “survived the cut” when the sheet of which it was part was used to print wartime Savannah bank notes. Because both notes had the same orientation on the sheet, most of the Apalachicola note survived intact when the sheet was cut as part of the process to get the Savannah notes into circulation. Benice rates the 50¢ note an R-7 rarity (4-12 examples known).
