Description
Iola, FL- Bank of Columbus (Georgia) 25¢ 184_ Benice 1 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
Iola was a new town created in 1837 to be the terminus for a new rail line from St. Joseph to bypass Apalachicola. The railroad was completed in 1839, but the cost of the rail line was more expensive than the river route to Apalachicola. St. Joseph became a virtual ghost town after a yellow fever epidemic and hurricane pummeled the town in 1841 and Iola’s reason for being no longer existed, leaving it as a river port rather than a commercial and banking center. The presidents of several banks from Florida and Georgia had financial interests in Iola, assuring that no newly formed banks were allowed to locate there. This note was datelined Iola and payable in Columbus, GA. It features a native American warrior at left and two putti with dolphins playing at center. This served as the Benice catalog plate note (Page 77).
