Jacksonville, FL- Florida Atlantic & Gulf Central Rail Road Company $1 June 30, 1859 Benice 32 PMG Very Fine 25.
The railroad, organized in 1851, finished construction of its route between Jacksonville and Alligator Town (now Lake City), FL in 1860. Surviving the war, it eventually ended up as part of today’s CSX system. This $1 design features a vignette of a passenger train across the left end, a beehive at bottom center symbolizing industriousness, and an eagle and shield vignette at right. This example was the plate note in the Benice Florida catalog and is estimated to be one of a surviving population of around 15 notes.
