Madison Court House, VA- Blue Ridge Turnpike Company 3¢ Jan. 13, 1862 Jones-Littlefield PM15-04 Remainder PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
The company was incorporated on March 25, 1848 and completed construction from New Market to Gordonsville, a distance of some 56 miles, by 1855. Not surprisingly, the road received heavy damage during the Civil War and the company abandoned the route. Eventually the counties along the route took over maintenance by 1870. This 3¢ note has seen a fair amount of time in circulation but has survived the experience without being the recipient of any repairs. PMG notes some stains and evidence of previous mounting. While this is technically a remainder because there is no visible Treasurer signature, this note clearly circulated. This is only the fourth example of which we are aware at present.
