(Kraus 53947/b) No. 455. March 1, 1862. No imprint. Impressive red-orange end panels and large “ONE” at center. The obligation states “Payable in Confederate Notes…” Signed by Henry Gottig. Printed on the back of an 1850s Merchants Mutual Insurance Company of New Orleans fiscal document. Henry Gottig was a merchant and also the Postmaster of Magnolia from 1865-1870. The Newman note was a well inferior PCGS Apparent Fine 15 that still managed a four-figure price. When both rarity and grade come together it is a wonderful thing.
