Description

Marianna, FL- Farmers Bank of Florida at its Agency in Perry, GA $5 Apr. 22, 1837 G20b Benice 17 PMG Very Fine 25.

This bank was authorized in 1834. In 1837, the bank’s officers fled to Perry, GA, leaving behind nearly $26,000 notes in circulation. They continued operating and issuing notes from their Georgia location. In 1838, Florida approved legislation allowing the bank to increase its capitalization to $200,000 if it redeemed all outstanding circulation and closed its agency in Georgia. Apparently this did not work out well, as the charter was revoked in 1842. This variety has the Georgia information engraved rather than handwritten, with Benice estimating a surviving population of around 4-12 notes.…….This is a very rare note!!!!
