Penned in black ink on the back is, “Issued Houston Tex / Feby 19th 63 / by B. Bloomfield / Major A(ssistant) C(ommissary of Subsistence). Bloomfield was from Louisiana and started the war in Virginia under the command of General John B. Magruder. They served in the Peninsula Campaign and after the Seven Days Battles, Bloomfield went with General Magruder to Texas. Magruder was given command of the Texas, New Mexico and Arizona district on November 29, 1862. On January 1, 1863 Magruder’s forces retook Galveston from the Yankees. While in Virginia, Bloomfield wrote The Quartermaster’s Guide Being A Compilation From The Army Regulations And Other Sources for the Confederacy.
