Description
Military Endorsement “Capt. F.N. Read AQM” T41 $100 1862 PF-61 Cr. 328A PMG Very Fine 25.
This 1863 dated note has an endorsement on the back indicating that it was “Paid out by Capt./ F.N. Read AQM CSA/ Feb. 13, 1863” as well as a black Richmond IP stamp paying interest to January 1, 1865. At the time this note was issued, Read was serving as AQM for the 26th Virginia Battalion, 2nd Brigade, Army of South Western Virginia. The unit was involved in a number of engagements from 1862-1864 with 1371 men serving during the unit’s existence. 48 men were killed in action, 147 wounded, 348 captured, 21 missing in action, 174 dying of disease, 36 medical discharges, 8 resignations, 272 desertions, and five men killed in a railroad accident. This note is a pleasant mid-grade example with a clear easily-read endorsement. This is a very rare offering bearing this officer’s endorsement and we are aware of only two examples at present.
