Description

Military Endorsement “E.C. Wharton Major & QM CSA” T39 $100 1862 PF-5 Cr. 290 PMG Uncirculated 62.

This $100 Confederate Treasury Note was issued in Houston, TX on July 16, 1863 by Major and QM Edward C. Wharton who was serving as the chief of the Clothing & Equipage Bureau in Houston at the time. This appointment was made by General Magruder but apparently was never officially approved, as later documents indicate that he carried the rank of Captain and AQM until the end of the war. Wharton was paroled at Houston on June 22, 1865. The note also has an IP stamp on the back, associated with use in the Trans-Mississippi Department, paying interest to January 1, 1865. The “5” of the date is boldly handwritten suggesting that an existing stamp had been used to pay interest to January 1, 1864 and that in 1865 the “4” was simply overwritten rather than stamping the note a second time. PMG notes stains and minor ink erosion that are not overly distracting………….
