nickel PE over RE • R-10 • MS-64 (PCGS (PCGS) •
Ex Chris Urquhart Collection and Steve Hayden. Part of a collection of copper-nickel Civil War
tokens. Steve Tanenbaum told me that these tokens, mostly unique, were probably first off of

the respective obverse dies and were probably struck to the order of a local numismatist. This die pair
was never used to make circulating tokens in any metal. This and related die 1018 coins I acquired
from this collection have never appeared on the open market before! See Notes below. A showpiece!
Obverse die state: Perfect. Very early impression with prominent die finish lines still visible. •
Reverse die state. Die relapped to remove some rust; dentils now thin and widely spaced from about
8 o’clock, clockwise to about 11 o’clock. Die heavily rusted on higher areas; lightly rusted on
lower areas except heavy rust before face. Many raised lines in the area of stars 1-4. Rim filed as
part of striking process, thus not examinable for study.
Notes: Part of a collection of copper-nickel Civil War tokens, ex Virgil M. Brand, Julius Guttag,
George J. Fuld, various other owners, and R&T; with reverse 1018. The group includes these 16 Fuld
numbers (Steve Tanenbaum: “Maximum mintage 2; all unlisted and unique): OH- 165-EQ-8d; 165-ER-12d;
165-EU-10d; 165-EV-18d; 165-FH-9d; 165-FV-9d; 165-FW-6d; 165-GA-5d; 165-GB-13d; 165-GC-11d;
165-GE-7d; 165-GG-8d; 165-GJ-1d; 165-GL-11d; 165-GN-6d; and 165-GP-6d.. On these the edge was at

first reeded, then placed in a plain collar with the result that the reeding is still sharp but the ends of the
reeds are flat and prooflike.
