Obsolete Currency Florida…….St. Joseph, FL- Commercial Bank of Florida, Payable at Bank of the United States, Philadelphia, PA $20 Post Note Apr. 1, 1847 G60 Benice 6B PMG Very Fine 20.
St. Joseph was a short-lived town created as an alternative to nearby Apalachicola. A failed canal project, a yellow fever epidemic, and a hurricane in 1841, combined to doom the town which had essentially vanished by early 1842. The Commercial Bank of Florida was headquartered in Apalachicola and operated an unauthorized branch in this location. This note was fraudulently issued well after both the bank and the town had vanished from the scene in the early 1840s.
