Description
T-15. Confederate Currency. 1861 $50. PMG Very Fine 20.
PF-1, Cr. 79. No. 9720. Plate A. Imprint of Southern Bank Note Company New Orleans. These were high quality notes printed by engraved steel plates on thick red fiber paper. The design features Ceres, goddess of agriculture, at left, and Justice, holding a sword and scales, at right. A steam powered passenger train chugs past a waterfront in the central vignette. A bold vermillion tinted protector is centered near the bottom. The example offered here is an evenly circulated midgrade note. Boldly inked design elements are sharply detailed on the wholesome paper of this challenging 1861 $50 note. When a Union naval blockade took New Orleans in late April, 1862, production of these Train notes ceased, which goes a long way to explain why they are scarce. One of the prettiest and most highly coveted of all Confederate types.
