Tallahassee, FL- State Bank of Florida $1 Certificate of Deposit July 1, 1862 Benice 43 PMG Choice Fine 15  The State Bank of Florida opened as a free bank in 1859. After the outbreak of the Civil War, specie payments were suspended and the bank issued “Certificates of Deposit” that were redeemable in either Confederate Treasury Notes or State of Florida notes. The bank’s ultimate fate is unclear although it very likely suspended in the wake of the end of the Civil War. PMG mentions a few small rust specks.
