Description
Tallahassee, FL- Union Bank of Florida $5 Jan. 12, 1835 G6 Benice 55 PMG Choice Fine 15.
Unlike most early Florida banks, the Union Bank was actually approved by Governor Duval. After acquiring the assets of the Central Bank of Florida, the bank was unable to make interest payments in 1841 and suspended the following year, with liquidation following shortly thereafter. The note has rather fanciful vignettes of an early passenger train and steamboat. A rather more realistic vignette of Nehamathla, a Native American leader, appears at right. This note served as the plate note in the 2008 Benice Florida state catalog.
